How does the clay waterer work?

When you put a bottle full of water on the watering pile, it takes a while for the water to penetrate into the pot soil through the porous watering pile.
If the soil in the flowerpot is dry, water will automatically wick from the clay into the soil, and the water will continue to wick into the soil until the soil is saturated with water, or until the bottle is empty. .
